Training
Our training program includes a full mediation training course, a mediation practicum, and free monthly inservices on mediation-related topics.
Whether you want to become a mediator yourself or simply learn more about collaborative dispute resolution, we can accomodate you at a reasonable cost.
There is no degree requirement for mediation training. Our mediators come from all personal and professional backgrounds.
Becoming a mediator
Basic mediation training
We offer a Washington Mediation Association-approved 40-hour Basic Mediation Training (BMT) course. This course is the first step toward becoming a mediator. To learn more about the WMA, visit their website.
Courses are held three times per year, in the early spring, summer, and fall. Spring and fall courses are spread over two weekends to accommodate work schedules. Summer courses are held over five consecutive days.
[Back to top]Mediation practicum
Graduates of the Basic Mediation Training course can enter our mediation practicum program.
During the practicum program, the trainee develops mediation and communication skills through observation and hands-on learning that can lead to certification with the Center. A trainee begins with 6 - 8 mediation observations, and then completes a mock mediation. The trainee can then develop skills by co-mediating 6 - 8 mediation cases. After the successful completion of these steps, the Board reviews the trainee's skills and growth for certification. The practicum is usually a year-long experience, but a few trainees have completed the program in as little as 3 months.
Certification with the Washington Mediation Association requires an additional 200 hours of mediation experience.
[Back to top]Continuing education inservices
We hold monthly inservices on topics relating to mediation.
Examples of previous inservice topics include:
- "Ethnic Perspective at the Mediation Table"
- "Mediating With Attorneys"
- "Secrets to Successful Negotiations"
In addition, we also hold a yearly inservice on mediation ethics.
Inservices are free and open to the public. We ask our volunteer mediators to attend four inservices per year.
